South Tyrol Museum of Archaelogy

In the South Tyrol Museum of Archaelogy in the capital Bolzano you find the Iceman Ötzi. By now he is one of the most famous mummies in the world. However, this museum also offers a lot of other interesting archaeological finds from long gone times. During a tour you can find out many extraordinary details of Ötzi’s life. If you so wish, you can certainly also visit the museum on your own and without tour.

Karneid Castle

20km from our hotel in Obereggen you find the majestic castle high above the entrance to the valley Val d’Ega/Eggental. The castle was built in the 13^th century; over the centuries it underwent constant changes including extensions and renovations. Since the 16^th century the Karneid Castle remained unchanged almost entirely and this makes of it a very special sight near the Dolomites. During a tour you can admire its unique elements concerning architecture and art history.

Kurhaus Meran

The Kurhaus is located at the Passer promenade in the heart of Meran. Because of its many rooms, it is often used as a stage for events of every kind. Here you find conferences, concerts, festivals and congresses. If you should happen to visit Meran, then you must put this sight in South Tyrol on your list.

Tirol Castle

One-hour drive from Val d’Ega/Eggental in South Tyrol you find the former home of the counts of Tyrol. In the Tirol Castle you get a good insight into the culture and history of the region. Furthermore, the castle hosts interesting exhibitions, which are changing throughout the year.

Sigmundskron Castle

The name Sigmundskron (literally meaning crown of Sigmund) of this sight in South Tyrol derives from its extensive park, which reminds of a crown. Today the castle is home to the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian. The South Tyrolean extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner has dedicated this museum to the theme “people and mountains” and the relationship between them. Sigmundskron Castle is situated at about 40 minutes’ drive from Hotel Cristal.

Lake Reschen

The artificially created reservoir is located in the commune Graun in Val Venosta/Vinschgau, ca. 130km from Obereggen. This sight in South Tyrol is especially known for the church tower emerging from the blue waters. It is a remnant of the former village Alt-Graun, which had been flooded in 1950 in the course of the creation of the dam lake.

Thurn Castle

The Ladin Chiastel de Thor towers above St. Martin in Thurn in Val Gardena/Gadertal. You can reach this sight in South Tyrol in a 1.5h car drive. Since its construction, this castle has been of major importance for the inhabitants of the Dolomite valley. Also, today it is a cultural focal point in Val Gardena/Gadertal. In the museum you find many interesting facts about the language, culture and history of the Ladins, the oldest language group in South Tyrol.
